Upon completion of this class the student, LVN, RN or other healthcare provider will have the knowledge, skills and ability to start and infuse intravenous fluids and withdraw blood.
After theory, students will first perform IV insertions and blood withdrawals on the mannikins, followed by live IV insertions and blood withdrawals with classmates (students may bring a proxy for live skills).

Course Description
- IV & Blood Withdrawal methods, PICC lines, Central lines and IV pumps.
- Includes review of human body anatomy & functions, electrolytes and fluids, IV solution concentrations, IV preparation, vein selection and live practice.
- The course meets the requirements of the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians for Licensed Vocational Nurses to become certified in I.V. therapy and blood withdrawal.

Peachie is a gem! She is a Registered Nurse with a Master’s Degree in Education and our IV Therapy & Blood Withdrawal Program Lead Instructor, while also teaching at an RN program in the Antelope Valley area. She is known as a very knowledgable, detail-oriented, organized instructor, who genuinely cares for each and every one of her students. She works very hard to ensure her students thoroughly understand the theory portion of IVBW and are successful with becoming IVBW certified, along with making sure that each student is entirely competent and confident with starting IVs and drawing blood during the hands-on skills portion of her classes.
FAQ
Will I become certified?
Yes, if you are an LVN or student LVN you will become certified (State of California BVNPT) after taking the 3-day course. For other healthcare providers, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Additional note: This course will not certify a non-healthcare provider as a phlebotomist – phlebotomy is a different course, which we do not teach.
What is the difference between the one-day and three-day class?
If you are an LVN or LVN student, you should take the three-day class, because the three-day class class will certify you with the BVNPT. Other professions may choose the take the one-day class. The one-day class is normally about 4 hours in duration and includes a comparable amount of hands-on skills practice (mannikins and live skills with classmates) as in the three-day class, there are a normally smaller number of students in class, but it does not cover theory in such depth as in the three-day class.
I have some experience with IV therapy & blood withdrawal. Which class should I take?
For RNs, RN students, or others who only need hands-on skills practice, we recommend the one-day skills class.
Will I get CEU (Continuing Education Hours) for renewing my license?
Yes, only if you are an LVN, licensed by the California BVNPT. LVNs receive 36 CE hours after completing the 3-day course. Other healthcare providers will not receive CEU and may not use the hours to renew their license.
I am an EMT or phlebotomist (CPT-1 or CPT-2). Can I take the class, and if so, do I take the one-day or three-day class? Will I become certified in IV therapy, then be able to start IVs, infuse medications, and draw blood after completing the class?
Phlebotomists and EMTs may take the course, but will not become certified. Only LVNs can be certified. Phlebotomists and EMTs will receive a Certificate of Completion, showing knowledge and competency with IVBW skills, and may attend either the one-day or three-day class. The one-day class focuses primarily on hands-on skills (not theory), and the three-day class includes in-depth theory, along with hands-on skills. Be sure to check with your employer/medical director for guidance regarding your scope of practice and guidelines with starting IVs, infusing medications, and drawing blood, and if approved to do so at your place of employment.
Can I take the 3-day IV/BW Certification class before taking the NCLEX board exam with the BVNPT?
Yes, you can take the class. Once you become a licensed LVN, we will forward your IV/BW certification paperwork to the BVNPT, when it will then be attached to your LVN license.
I am an RN or RN student/new grad. Should I take the the one-day or the three-day class?
If I take the 3-day class, what is the difference between the virtual and traditional classes?
If you take the traditional class, skills are performed each of the 3 days, in the afternoons.
If you take the virtual class, skills are done on the 3rd day, when students come into our training facility.
The curriculum, material, time in class, skills, testing requirements, and completion certificate/certification are all exactly the same whether you choose to take the traditional or virtual class.
