Course Description

ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation is the class that most employers suggest or require during the hiring process. For example: new grad nurses applying for positions in telemetry and other units; and also nursing students prior to starting their clinical rotations.
The ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation (same as Basic Arrhythmia) Course is a classroom-based, Instructor-led dysrhythmia recognition course designed to improve electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation skills and pharmacology knowledge for treating cardiovascular emergencies. ECG & Pharmacology contains two modules, ECG is the first and primary module for the course, followed by Pharmacology, which covers the medications utilized in treating ECG arrhythmias, along with pacemakers.
Arrhythmias and rhythms included: NSR, SB, ST, A-Flutter, A-Fib, Junctional, SVT, PAC, PVC, SVT, Ideoventricular, VT, VF, Asystole, PEA, Heart Blocks.

Course Content

Heart anatomy
Basic electrophysiology
Normal ECG measurements
Arrhythmia recognition and causes, including all heart blocks and life-threatening rhythms
Basic arrhythmias Pharmacology
Basic ACLS drugs and usage
Drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
Integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms

Intended Audience

This course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who require this specialized knowledge for their job

Healthcare Providers who wish to strengthen their ECG skills
ACLS and/or PALS students as a pre-course option who complete the pre-course self-assessment and find they need to improve their knowledge

Mike has actively participated in over 2,000 cardiac arrest situations and trauma-related emergencies since 1992. His experience also includes international critical care air medical transport in Asia and Europe, ambulance critical care ground transport, and caring for post open-heart surgery ventilator-dependent patients.

FAQ

What is the difference between the one-day ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation class and the 3 day EKG Technician Program?

Upon completion of the ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation class, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. After completing the EKG Technician Program, you will become a nationally certified EKG Technician.

I am not in the medical field. Can I take the ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation class?

You are welcome to attend the class, however, you will not become certified, but will receive a Certificate of Completion. Most students who take the ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation class are licensed or student healthcare providers. If you would like to become nationally certified, you should take the 3 day EKG Technician Program.

Will I get CEU (Continuing Education Hours) for renewing my license?

Yes, only if you are an LVN, licensed by the California BVNPT. Other healthcare providers will not receive CEU and may not use the hours to renew their license. Effective 2017, the BRN no longer allows RNs to receive CE for ECG Dysrhythmia courses, as shown on the BRN website:

Is this an AHA course?

The AHA, effective 2017, no longer offers any ECG courses. This course is largely based on the former AHA ECG class curriculum, and has been improved upon and optimized for learners of various professions.
