In medical terminology, PEA stands for Pulseless Electrical Activity. PEA is a cardiac arrest rhythm characterized by the presence of organized electrical activity on the electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, but the absence of a palpable pulse and effective mechanical contractions of the heart. Essentially, the heart’s electrical system is functioning, but there is inadequate blood flow to sustain life.

PEA is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate intervention. Despite the presence of electrical activity on the ECG, patients with PEA are effectively in cardiac arrest and require prompt initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) interventions, such as airway management, intravenous access, and administration of medications like epinephrine, to restore circulation and improve outcomes. Identifying and addressing reversible causes of PEA, such as hypovolemia, hypoxia, cardiac tamponade, tension pneumothorax, and electrolyte abnormalities, are crucial components of management.
